about

Patrick 'Pack' McMahon was sixty years of age in 1972 when Tom Munnelly collected several songs from him, one of which beind this song. MacMahon had not the full four verses, the remaining verses were found in the Munnelly Collection and MacMahon's air and rhythm were adapted to them. Pack learnt this song from his neighbour, Joe Conealy (in my own singing of the song I mistakenly mention Joe as the singer). The song has Roud no. 7995 and is a collection of nonsense verses each dnding in a hapless comical tragedy. The recording of Pack McMahon singing 'He's Gone And On To Glory' (or 'Little Billy Prance') can be found in the Sound Archive of the National Folklore Collection with the tape number TM88/A/2.
