about

Tom Munnelly amassed a huge collection of English language songs. He found that the characters of these songs followed certain rules. It became clear that, in comic songs, women could beat their husbands whereas men could not elicit such an abuse. However, men could carry out the ultimate crime of murder. This set of 'rules' reflects the physical offences which constituted as humour in the Ireland of the past. 'Páidín O'Rafferty' is a rarity in which both offences take place in the one singing. This song was also sourced from Munnelly's recordings of Patsy Johnston and can be found in the Sound Archive of the National Folklore Collection with the tape number TM0009/A.
