about

Tom Munnelly recorded this song from several singers, two of whom were Rose Daly and Ann McGill (mentioned in the recording). There versions were similar. Rose Daly's voice had a sweet tone and it was clear that she got quite a bit of enjoyment out of singing this song in good company. A beating also occurs in 'The Neat Little Window' which again comes from a woman wielding a poker. However, in this song the abuse comes from the hand of Johnny's lover's grandmother! Munnelly's recording of Rose Daly's singing can be found in the Sound Archive of the National Folklore Collection with the tape number TM0046/A/3.
